The 2010-2011 school year is the second year as a school for Maize South High School. The 632 students and the administrations consider it more of a home away from home than just a typical school.
Sheila Rathbun, principal of Maize South High School, repeated this comment tha she heard from a student, “We’re not like classmates, we’re family.” “MSHS is family,” said Rathbun. “We care about each other...that’s being a Maverick. It’s no longer 20-30 different groups or cliques; everyone is family. Students are accepted for who they are. There is a lot of school spirit and pride.”

Principal Sherman Padgett and assistant principals Jeff Freund, Lisa Orsak, Miguel Ortiz and Belinda Whitten lead this school of just under 2,000 students. With special offerings such as canoeing in physical education class, North High School has garnered nationwide publicity for the unique experience it provides. During the spring, students hold a water festival where they demonstrate the skills learned in P.E. North’s academic success also has earned it recognition over the past decade and the school prides itself in being an AVID National Demonstration School.

Wichita Collegiate School is an eastside private school that offers classes for everyone from early childhood through high school. The school was founded in 1963 and has gone from 100 students the first year to more than 1,000 students in the 2010-2011 school year. With a strong focus on challenging academic curriculum and many extracurricular opportunities, Collegiate strives to provide each student with a wellrounded educational experience.

Just under 150 students attend Metro- Meridian where the motto is, “The little school with the big heart.” USD 259 spokesperson Susan Arensman said, “Metro-Meridian’s biggest asset is the ability of the staff to connect with students in an effort to make them academically successful. As students experience success at Metro-Meridian, they accept ownership in all aspects of the school and their lives.”

New for the 2010-2011 school year, Andover eCademy has 160 students enrolled, mostly from the Wichita area but it is also open to students in other areas of the state.
Keturah Austin with Andover Public Schools explains a little about what makes this new program so unique, “Andover eCademy recognizes the importance of socialization among our students. We provide many opportunities for students to interact with one another, such as in-house days, family socials, field trips and student clubs. Andover eCademy currently offers five different clubs: Chess, Young Authors, Scrapbooking, Science and Bowling. We feel that providing these opportunities for our students makes us more unique than other non-traditional schools.” The school’s administrator, Mark A. Evans, Superintendent of Schools for Andover Public Schools said, “Using online classes not only provides for our students today, but it prepares them for the future. Most colleges are now using online learning to supplement the typical classroom setting.”
Enrollment begins in April for the 2011-2012 school year.
