Beech student receives Red Cross Hero Award

Trinity Sommers, fourth-grade student at Beech Elementary, was awarded the Disaster Relief Hero Award from the American Red Cross-Midway Chapter. Sommers, along with her classmates, learned how to create a disaster preparedness kits with the Red Cross’ Pillowcase Project. A representative from the Red Cross taught them how to keep necessary items in a pillowcase, like flashlights, radios, batteries, food and water, and keep it close to their beds. A week after working on the Pillowcase Project, there was a fire in Sommers’ apartment building and she was prepared and knew what to do during the emergency.
